单词 | Mössbauer effect |
释义 | Mössbauer effect The emission without recoil of a gamma-ray photon from a nucleus embedded in a solid. The emission of a gamma ray by a single atom in a gas causes the atom to recoil and reduces the energy of the gamma ray from its usual transition energy E0 to E0 - R, where R is the recoil energy. In 1957 R. L. Mössbauer (1929– ) discovered that if the emitting nucleus is held by strong forces in the lattice of a solid, the recoil energy is shared by all the nuclei in the lattice. As there may typically be 1010–1020 atoms in the lattice the recoil will be negligible and the gammaray photon has the energy E0. The same principle applies to the absorption of gamma rays and is used in Mössbauer-effect spectroscopy to elucidate problems in nuclear physics, solid-state physics, and chemistry |
