单词 | gravitational collapse |
释义 | gravitational collapse A phenomenon predicted by the general theory of relativity in which matter compressed beyond a critical density collapses as a consequence of gravitational attraction until it becomes a point singularity (see black hole). The singularity resulting from gravitational collapse can be interpreted as indicating both the limits of the theory of general relativity and the necessity of constructing quantum gravity. The cosmic censorship conjecture suggests that the end point of gravitational collapse should be a black hole, since singularities are always hidden behind the event horizon (see death of a star) of a black hole. The process of gravitational collapse is thought to be important in astrophysics, as it provides indirect evidence for the existence of black holes |
